Buzzin Trivia

Lake Havasu City is located on the Arizona shoreline of Lake Havasu where the world-famous original London Bridge crosses over to a small island in the Colorado River.  The Bridge serves as a backdrop to the English Village that has grown up around it.  The village consists of Tudor-style buildings and quaint shops that create an atmosphere of Medieval England.  It celebrated its official grand opening at its new Arizona home in Lake Havasu City in October, 1971.

Lake Havasu City’s proximity to Las Vegas is 2-1/2 hours (153 miles), its proximity to Phoenix is 3 hours (208 miles), and its proximity to Los Angeles is 5 hours (298 miles).

Havasu is the Mohave word which means “blue water”.  In the early 1800’s, mountain men trapped beaver in that section of the Colorado River, but by the 1830’s, unfriendly Mohave Indians made the area an unsafe place to live, so the trappers moved on.  Spaniards also discovered the region, mining in the nearby mountains along the river.  Mining camps sprung up along the river banks as more and more prospectors arrived.  With the construction of the Parker Dam in the mid to late 1930’s, the terrain changed and obscure little villages and communities disappeared as the shoreline was widened.

In 1963, Robert P. McCulloch purchased a 26-square mile parcel of barren desert that became the site for Lake Havasu City.  At that time, it was the largest single tract of state land ever sold in Arizona, and the cost per acre was under $75.  It is said he chose that parcel when he flew over the area in search of a location to test the outboard boat motors he manufactured.  McCulloch Properties, Inc., a subsidiary of McCulloch Oil developed Lake Havasu City.  Robert McCulloch purchased the London Bridge in 1968, and it took 3 years to complete the project of reassembling the famous bridge in Lake Havasu City.

With more than 300 days of sunshine every year, Lake Havasu City is ideal for golf, tennis, water sports, and desert tours.
